The Black Hills became a refuge for woodland species that could not readily tolerate the summer extremes in heat and, possibly, Jesser rainfall in surrounding areas. Effectively, these plant associations, which at present take up only a small portion of the total area of the Hills, concentrate both boreal plant and animal relicts. Many of these plant communities are now found on steep but short cliffs in particular limestone units. As regards land snails, the Black Hills fauna provides ready examples of the history outlined broadly above. North America is generally divided Acer 91.E4912.I31 two biogeographic regions based on terrestrial snails Western and Eastern American Divisions: Figure 1.
Each Division has several smaller Provinces as members.
The Black Hills straddles the border between the two Divisions. Largely because of the early find of a species of Oreohelix in the Black Hills this region Acer 91.E4912.I31 been treated as part of the Western Division e. In the Rocky Mountain Province, the genus has a fossil distribution dating back at least as early as the Cretaceous Henderson, Note that the rest of South Dakota Acer 91.E4912.I31 been placed in the Interior Province, Eastern American Division; but, largely because of the presence of Oreohelix cooperi Binney, the Black Hills has been regarded as part of the Western American Division.
This placement is somewhat problematic. About 50 species of land snails have been reported previously from South Dakota Over,; Pilsbry, ; Roscoe, ; Hubricht, Evaluation of the provincial affinities of the South Dakota land snail fauna is hampered by the fact that the state's mollusk fauna is not as well known as that of many eastern states. Hubricht regards South Dakota especially the Interior Province portion as one of the six most poorly known eastern states. Accordingly, we made some effort to collect all large and small taxa and to reevaluate Black Hills land snail biogeography; results are discussed below.
Most previously collected species are Cosmopolitan or Interior Eastern division forms; but several Western Division species are reported in the literature, all from the immediate Black Acer 91.E4912.I31 area only.

Baker in the mid- s. During the earlier survey, several other species of particular interest were found at our sites. These included Vertigo arthuri von Martens,at that time known previously only from two North Dakota Acer 91.E4912.I31 drift specimens, and two other possible candidate taxa.
A couple of specimens from one Spearfish Canyon site closely resembled the Upper Midwest former Category 2 candidate Vertigo hubrichti Pilsbry, but available material was not completely mature. Vertigo hubrichti and Catinella gelida are definite glacial relicts in their current Upper Midwest habitat Frest, In our later work, we also Acer 91.E4912.I31 the opportunity to revisit some earlier survey sites and to reexamine previously collected material in the light of large new collections. This report incorporates work from the, and surveys. For the earlier surveys we were provided with the 1 9 4 8- Acer 91.E4912.I31 maps of the Biack Hiiis and a contemporary Forest Service map.

The 1 9 9 9 surveys used the much more accurate Forest Service topographic map revisions. While we obviously could not cover all possible Black Hills National Forest land snail sites, our survey is now sufficiently complete to allow valid generalizations to be made concerning abundance and rarity of most taxa, particularly of the Acer 91.E4912.I31 of Special Concern. The sections on each of these taxa are thus organized in a standard format, and constitute status surveys for these species in the Black Hills National Forest. Where taxa are endemic to, or largely endemic to, the Black Hills National Forest, they could be regarded as status surveys in the full sense.
However, we refrain from making listing recommendations for these taxa below.
It could prove Acer 91.E4912.I31 to locate other colonies of many or all of these species in the Black Hills. However, finding of large numbers of additional sites is not probable. This report is intended to be a summary and synthesis, Acer 91.E4912.I31 of all of historic literature on mollusks of the Black Hills and secondly of our three surveys specifically for Black Hills mollusks. As well, we add information resulting from Forest Service collecting, if it was made available to us. Finally, we generalize from experience in the Western U.
Also, our recent observations to the present at over 6, terrestrial and freshwater sites have enabled us to evaluate threats and management problems re western land snails to a degree not possible from local data alone. As Acer 91.E4912.I31, we have extensive experience with local land snails. For a complete list of these reports, contact the senior author. Others are referenced herein. Acer 91.E4912.I31we examined Forest Service collections from about 20 additional sites. Finally, in we added in excess of new sites and revisited quite a number of old sites as well, bringing the total to some sites. Note that field observations are just that: Many other sites were surveyed more casually, for example those in specified drainages done into avoid uselessly multiplying negative sites.
Our emphasis here was to survey the drainage portions specified, looking particularly for Sensitive species sites, rather than to accumulate even larger site totals than required. However, project goals in terms of number of sites and Acer 91.E4912.I31 collected were exceeded. Download the latest drivers for your Acer EI31 to keep your Computer up-to-date.
